PORTO, January 06, 2023 – The Earth is the only home we have, so our mission must be to protect it. Moreover, we must remember that we are all responsible for the fate of our home! jp.group believes that we have influence when it comes to contributing to the sustainability of our planet. This membership is made with commitment, seeing it as another essential pillar in the mission in the social and corporate responsibility mission that jp.group has committed itself to fulfill over its 33 years of existence.

Since 2017, jp.group has been implementing several initiatives to combat climate change, such as the efficient use of resources, waste treatment, energy saving and the promotion of carbon neutrality, in all its production and business units. The electricity used in the facilities comes from renewable sources, which brings several advantages, as it does not pollute the atmosphere, the soil and uses sources that do not run out. Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the headquarters, reducing energy costs, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. With these initiatives jp.group has already avoided the emission of more than 880 kg of CO2 and 35% of the energy used by the company comes from solar panels.

Today, consumers are looking for more and more information about the sustainability of the products they buy, and therefore the role of companies becomes more relevant. Since January 2022, jp.ik equipment has adopted packaging certified by the Forest Stewardship Council made from sustainably cultivated forests and recyclable plastic.

It’s a great honor to know that we can make a difference and make the world we live in more sustainable and healthy, and it’s very gratifying to know that the effort we make every day is rewarded. In this sense, in June 2021, jp.ik obtained the Environmental Certification – ISO 14001:2015.

“In addition to the actions mentioned above, I am pleased to share that since 2016 JP Sá Couto reaffirms its support for the seventeen Principles of the United Nations Global Compact in the areas of Human Rights, Labour, Environment and Anti-Corruption. As a Group, our commitment to the Climate Pact means that every day we will be careful to look closely at our actions to continuously improve the integration of this Pact into our principles, our business strategy, our culture, and our operations. of our companies. We are also committed to sharing this information with our stakeholders using our main communication channels”, Jorge Sá Couto, Chairman of JP Sá Couto.

###

At the beginning of July, a thorough audit was carried out, which made it possible to recognize compliance with all official measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic in order to ensure the health of our employees, clients, partners, distributors and their families, and at the same time. sustainable business continuity.

In this context determined by the uncertainty and vagueness resulting from the spread of the coronavirus and the pandemic declaration made by WHO last March, jp.ik, a leader in the sector of technologies applied to Education since 2008, assumed the commitment to prepare the response and contribute actively to minimize the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the end of January this year, jp.ik started monitoring the evolution of the coronavirus in order to make informed decisions about adopting efficient and effective preventive measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Over the past few months, and based on the evolution of the severity of the risk, jp.ik has adopted the necessary and appropriate preventive measures in order to mitigate the risk of contagion. On the whole of the measures adopted are, for example:

Providing 25 hand disinfection stations together with the definition of circulation routes and the sanitization of spaces.

Remote working for all staff members whose functions are likely to be carried out remotely.

The installation of a gantry and tunnel with a spraying/ disinfection system, to be use for everyone who accesses the facilities.

The placement of disinfectant mats for shoes and protective acrylics in the areas of service and logistics operations.

The possibility of conducting serological tests, that is, immunity tests, to all employees, whose adhesion rate was over 90%.

A return to work manual was also created with measures to be taken by employees before leaving home, on the way to the company, on the company’s premises and on the way home.

In short, the COVID SAFE distinction, which is  verified and pronounced by APCER, is intended to ensure that all interested parties comply with the guidelines of health and labor authorities regarding health and safety in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our world is full of curiosities and our daily items do really have concealed lives! And, fortunately, the “Earth School” is willing to disclose them in a thrilling and rigorous way. But what is this educational website about?

The “Earth School” is an initiative of The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and TED-Ed, that was launched to keep children and youngsters connected to nature.

In this unprecedent time when teachers are struggling to move to quality online lessons and parents are eager to keep their kids engaged and connected to the outside world, a group of experts was supported by National Geographic, WWF, and the BBC with excellence videos, articles, and interactive resources. So, the “Earth School” – launched on the Earth Day and to be concluded on the World Environment Day – covers an immersive 30-day nature-focused content for learners of all ages. If most of the themes may be more relevant to schoolers, kids aged 4 may already be or become sensitive to these issues with the proper help.

What you will find here is a collection of 30 questions in an all-inclusive look to relevant knowledge on society, nature, change, individual and collective action or just interesting and applicable information about things we use in our daily life.

The videos set on “The Nature of Our Stuff” target positive actions upon our planet, once we become aware of all the implications our daily consumptions may have.

Could you imagine that the production of smartphones†components, for example, could affect “habitats”, provoking animal flee, increasing water and air pollution, and bringing social problems, like people displacement and bad labour conditions for workers? “The Nature of Society” videos show us how we have been imitating nature to create our human ways of living. The third week presents us “The Nature of Nature” where we can learn that jungles can become deserts and riffs can become lifeless rocks. And change will be understood on the fourth week – “The Nature of Change” –, where we are invited to help rebalance the planet.

The collection of videos on “The Nature of Individual Action” explain us why our actions are infinitely valuable to live among others in our desirably structured cities. We are invited to enter a bees†crime scene to understand why they are disappearing so fast making the honey price become higher. We also may learn that plants are, in fact, the ones that take care of us and not the other way around. Finally, we have “The Nature of Collective Action” available with small movies that present us new concepts: do you know that if you love the themes of sustainability and even if you donâ€t want to become a professional scientist you may become a prominent citizen scientist? This happens in a kind of crowdsourcing research where you may exchange expertise on these matters.

But it is not just about watching these movies. In fact, for each theme you may find the following set: a short and very well-designed video, a quiz, a bunch of additional resources to further explore and a space to chat in a real-time guided discussion.

So, if you are sinking into work and do not have time to hunt for materials and intentionally play around the proposals we usually give you, this week it is really easy and safe to let your kids dive alone into this world. All the website offers a pleasant user experience and it presents a strong didactical approach to themes that make us more purposeful and engaged citizens. But in the case you have curiosity and time for that, start watching the videos on your own and attract your kidâ€s attention with a tricky question about common things.

Like a flipped approach, you will light the child/youngsterâ€s autonomous discovery attitude. After they have watched the movie, enter the scene and move into your shared and preferred territories. Are they debates? So, just talk through the exposed situations, creating solutions for them or new questions they may raise.

Are you more into hands-on activities? Then follow the suggestions along each video or make your own projects at home, whether they are more scientifically, sociologically, or philosophically oriented. As TED-Ed asks us: “What makes your heart beat faster?”

Are you all willing to taste new flavours and cook with new ingredients, perhaps experimenting new and more sustainable food? And if you really like cooking, what menu will you create? But if you prefer communication and argumentation, how will you convince others to join this meal? Will it be through design and craft techniques or just letting a convincing appeal on your social networks? If you are more into poetry and emotional touch, learn with Luke Howard about the clouds, the rainbow, or the rain to conquer those elusive concepts that make written arts become so insightful to our hearts.

Or, finally, go into a very scientific project that engages all the family with a new leitmotiv: the reuse of old gadgets or the usage reduction of cotton t-shirts, for example.

In fact, it is all about engaging with a part of this worldâ€s vastness with all our strengths, because it is certain that if you take such a walk on the woods you will come out taller than the trees, whether they are sequoias or Bhutan cypresses.

Last monday the Green Project Awards presented the 9thÂ Awards Ceremony which was held for the first time in the city of Oporto. The auditorium of the Serralves Foundation was the chosen stage for this ceremony in a joint organization with the Oporto City Council and Lipor.

The award ceremony, conducted by Inês Lopes Gonçalves, was part of the conference program “The New Economy” whose thematic focus was on the Cities.
jp.ik applied for the Special Prize for International Business Cooperation promoted for the first time by the Green Projects Awards initiative. jp.ik submitted the project “No child without school, no school without connectivity” developed in partnership with Virtual Educa – a multilateral cooperation initiative under the wing of the Organization of American States (OAS) whose mission is to provide sustainable infrastructures with connectivity to communities located in remote areas, isolated and with fewer resources.

At the centre of the project is jp.ik’s Popup School concept, a fully integrated solution with a simple and rapid implementation process, which is capable to offer a sustainable school to the neediest communities. Inside it has everything needed to create an innovative learning environment: in addition to flexible furniture, it includes computers or tablets for students and teachers – with educational software – an interactive whiteboard and a router. Developed thinking of the most remote areas, the connectivity is a focal point in this project, contributing to break the isolation.

It was with this remarkable project that jp.ik applied for the Special Prize for International Business Cooperation and won it.

Congratulations, jp.ik team!
