Back to School in 2020: Adapting to a New Normal

The United Nations stands for the urgency to get children and youngsters back to schools after a long period of lockdown due to the coronavirus spread.

These nationwide lockdowns have impacted hundreds of millions of students. Plus, several other nations have implemented localized closures, impacting millions of additional learners.

As the virus is resurging in France, Britain, Spain and South Korea, medical authorities request for caution. School districts, teachers, and parents are dealing with the risks of diverse learning scenarios. Details can be sparse and confusing and constantly changing. Sometimes it seems life will never get back to normal.

But one thing is certain: after summer holidays some type of school will start. Whether at home, at school, in person, on screen, or a mix of all these models, this is the challenge. Going back to school while dealing with the coronavirus’ need for restraint.

For this school year our purpose seems to be clear. As a united community, we aim to ensure all children and teenagers return to schools to continue their learning journey and achieve their life goals. Due to Covid-19 pandemic we should combine efforts, knowledge and experiences to promote a healthy and safe return of the entire educational community to the school premises.

Children are seeing their parents going back to work and might think life is back to normal. They also might get bored of staying indoors. So, UNICEF Nigeria created an animation “Lara and Friends COVID-19 adventure” to disseminate information to children on how to stay safe and protect their loved ones.
